Jeffers

Still a great read, that article.

UF Mike

Thanks, Jeffers. Much 'preciated. Sorry I missed your calls--I haven't called back cuz I'm feelin' kinda (way) raggedy. Hopefully I'll get in touch by the end of the day...

bulletholes

I saw two Fugazi albums on the throwaway shelf at Half-price books yesterday.
i got 4 years today Mike....gonna do my chicken dance at the 6 O'Clock tonight!

UF Mike

Congratulations! That's great, Bulletholes. Sincerely. I wish you many more--one day at a time, of course.

Jeffers

I left my phone at work. Call me at home. Not sure i have your cell number here, but I'll try to track it down after dinner. Hang in.

Martijn

You are the causer of a shit storm. You must be very proud.

(I've got nothing to say, but all the more to think. Hang in.)

UF Mike

Don't sweat it, Jeffers. I'm gonna be hard to reach tonight anyway. Love you man.

Martijn, I am proud. I'm proud as punch. But that was a long time ago. I'd like to cause a new shit storm, if I could just figure out how.

Martijn

About spelling mistakes, to make Gillian feel better and for allround fun & amusement. Last week, I had photographed the label on my copy of White Album, a record I traded with my mother 20 years ago and have seen all my life. I used it here & I used it there. Yesterday, I made the picture the desktop background on my computer. And what do I see a day later? On the label it reads: "While mi guitar gently weeps"! I wonder if anyone ever noticed (google here I come!).

Mike, I'm sure you find a way to piss of whole tribes & cults again. Remember, it's not that long ago that you caused the revolt of the Manskirt People. You'll strike again! There are so many targets... bus drivers, baby-talking mothers, the Mossad, Wladimir Klichko, Willie Nelson, crab fishers, me, Picasso, CIA, Washington Post readers, Astrologists, Creationists, Simon Wiesenthal, New Age 'you've got the choice' dildoes, Michelin Star restaurants, model train freaks, RHCP, Salt Lake City (did you know the Mormons convert people posthumous? They converted all our former Kings & Queens we learned last month; so beware of your soul!), et cetera et cetera.

gillian

Thanks, Martijn :)

bulletholes

My spelling is getting bad. I have trouble with "s"'s and "C"'s that i didn't used to have. Also words like "definitely"...the last 5 letters are blowing my mind. I used to be a good speller, and now I'm only so-so.
Yesterday I was typing "prooved" and then "prooves" and I couldn't figure out why spell check was correcting me.
I am losing it.

Jan Martin Löhndorf

Read sometng written by Thomas Mann if yiu can get your hands on it, that'll help. Or it will demotivate you. Hm ... better do it like Martijn and chose "Winnie the Pooh", that's better. And funnier. Also: "Rat Scabies and The Holy Grail", I've read it in the original english and it's plain hilarious in a positive way.

Jan Martin Löhndorf

I meant to write "you" of course. With me, it's rather my eyesight and not the spelling.

Martijn

Mike, will you be fine... fine and restful.

Moloch! Moloch!

If not, call me, or us.

UF Mike

I don't make too many spelling errors--what I do is skip entire words. That's my thing... thanks Martijn and Jan Martin maybe I'll finally get around to reading "Buddenbrooks" which I started and ran out of gas on. And I want to find this "Rat Scabies and the Holy Grail" you're talking about... it sounds great!

Martijn

My ideal is not reading at all. Nothing. Just buying a pair of snakeskin boots and a gun and drive crazy as a '60s drummer to Vegas and party into oblivion...

But here I am again, reading and drinking Fanta. I suspect the only reason I read so much is because I buy so many books and want to get rid of them by reading them through. That's not a good reason, and it's not going to work either. No books, Vegas, snakeskin! Skipping words is good. Words like Fanta. Hey.

Martijn

Ha! I suddenly wondered if Fanta was known in America or not. I thought it was, but looked it up anyway and this is what Wikipedia says: Fanta is a global brand of fruit-flavored carbonated soft drinks from the Coca-Cola Company. There are over 100 flavors worldwide. The drink debuted in Nazi Germany in 1941 and originally sold only in Europe.

Who knew.

bulletholes

Holy shit! Fanta is a commie drink? I drank so much grape when I was a kid my teeth stained purple. those Kraut bastards!

Jan Martin Löhndorf

"Can a punk rock legend find what Monty Python couldn't?" - it made me laugh hard and I guess it removes any gloom immediately. And there won't be any movie with Tom Hanks in it made out of it I'm sure.

Martijn

'We already got one'... best line from that film of all great lines. You're making me curious too about Rat Scabies. And what's wrong with Tom Hanks? I know he's a bit sissy but he's made some fabulous films I think. 'The Burbs' for instance.

Martijn

Most things you read on the web is ill-written rubbish, but this summary of The 'Burbs is powerful stuff:

"An overstressed suburbanite and his paramilitaric neighbor struggle to prove their paranoid theory that the new family in town is a front for a cannibalistic cult."

Dan

You've gotta kill y'r idols, right?

I love that article Mike. I read it back when & recently re-read it, & admire it for the same reason I admired the U.K music press for many years,
actual criticism.
In Australia we once had a vibrant independent music press, but gradually it was bought out by y'r Sony's & y'r Warner's until all you hear from the street press now is 'Baaa' or 'Gee whiz' - & rarely if ever 'Humbug'! & it's obviously because they own most of the properties & titles reviewed therein.

I miss columns like
Afraid To Rock
- Which named & shamed bands which were...
(&)
Bismillah
(title taken from Bohemian Rhapsody)
-Which exposed the top five worst lyrics in any singles or albums released each week.

>sigh,the old days...<

Question everything!
...& its always good to receive personal validation from an ice cream van, right Mike?

UF Mike

Martijn, I thought you were fooling when you said Fanta originated in Nazi Germany. But that's what Wikipedia says. Could it have been slipped in there by a prankster?

I really need to see the Rat Scabies doc (is that what it is?) and The Burbs. Both sound intriguing as hell. I mean, I'm not a big Tom Hanks fan either, but he's done some good stuff. Wilson! Wilson!!!

UF Mike

Oh, and thanks Dan. Things here are pretty much the same. The "criticism" is too often noncritical, because the critic is "owned" by the same people that put out the music. It's shameful.

Jan Martin Löhndorf

It's a well written documentary about a grailhunt that's going "onetwothreefour!".

Martijn

Gabba gabba holy! Hi Jan Martin.

gillian

Mike, that Fugazi piece was great!

Jan Martin Löhndorf

Hi Martijn! Yeah, the book is neat neat neat!

UF Mike

Aw shucks, Gillian. You're making me blush.

Martijn

Your Fugazi article will live on in everybody's hearts & nightmares. Greatness is never popular. "The Velvet Underground & Nico reached No. 171 on the charts."

(I just read this after researching a bit on Lou Reed since I'm now playing his first solo album, a record that I love but was a commercial failure.)

gillian

Incidentally, that whole "eat a bag of cocks" thing is one of the best lines ever. I shared it with a friend and he said it's his new favorite expression.

UF Mike

You have famous punk rock photog Glen Friedman to thank for that line.

gillian

It's awesome, as are you.
