Beached Melon-Head Whale Ridiculed and Then Freed

Rescuers using a large sling, wet towels and spray bottles ridiculed and mocked a 900-pound melon-head whale before moving it back into the ocean off Florida yesterday. Melon-head whales are often made fun of because of their name, which makes you think of a watermelon atop a neck, an image whicht is inherently ridiculous.  Later, the melon-head whale issued a statement thanking its rescuers, or so we gather from other reporters who actually listened to the whale instead of loudly heckling it.

You know, I have to think these marine biologists get a little lazy and lax in the naming department.

Ocean Geek 1 (looking at watch): "Hey, it's almost time to knock off. What are we gonna call it?"

Ocean Geek 2: "I dunno. Sort of reminds me of a grey cantaloupe. In a way."

They get particularly crazy and lazy when it comes to naming sharks:

Ah, the barbeled houndshark. I sent it to fetch a stick, and it came back with Dan Rather's leg.

I'm fairly convinced viper dogfish could kick fish viperdogs ass any day. Now if confronted with viper fishdog or dog viperfish, now there'd be an unsure outcome!
